One of the most inspiring international sporting events will take place in Sofia from June 13 to 19, 2026 – the Down Syndrome World Championships Bulgaria 2026.
Bulgaria’s most successful tennis player, Grigor Dimitrov, has accepted the invitation to become an official ambassador of the Championships – a role that carries a powerful message of support, inspiration, and inclusion through sport.
For the first time, Bulgaria will host an event of this scale, bringing together athletes with Down syndrome from around the world to compete in five sports: athletics, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, and table tennis.
As an ambassador, Dimitrov embraces the cause with a strong sense of responsibility, aiming to inspire and support athletes who, through their dedication and spirit, prove that there are no limits to what can be achieved.
As part of the initiative, he also met with Bulgaria’s only tennis player with Down syndrome – Plamen Pavlov from Yambol, who is currently preparing for the Championships under the guidance of his coach Tanya Lahteva. Пламен Павлов от Ямбол, който под ръководството на своята треньорка Таня Лахтева се подготвя за участие в шампионата.
The Championships are organized by the Adapted Physical Activity Federation – Bulgaria, led by President Slav Petkov, under the auspices of the international organization SUDS, ensuring the highest standards and equal conditions for all athletes.
With the support of Grigor Dimitrov and the participation of hundreds of athletes from across the globe, Sofia is preparing to become a stage for inspiration, sporting excellence, and powerful human stories.
